In his youth he played tournaments in Germany and Poland. He also won numerous chess tournaments in Guatemala. But he was never able to win the national championship title.

Life
Hans was the son of Sigmund Cohn and Rosa, née Silber. Very little is known about his youth.

In 1929, he decided to emigrate to escape the persecution of Jews in Germany. His voyage ended in the harbour of Puerto Barrios in Guatemala. He initially worked as a language teacher for German, English and Yiddish. His Polish wife, Elizabeth Pollag, found work as a cook at the British embassy. He later worked as a sports editor.

He gave up his intention of moving to the United States and settled in Guatemala in 1930.

64 lances humorísticos de ajedrez (1938)
Maestros latino-americanos y finales artisticos (1940, Latin American chess masters and endgame studies)
De la Aperturas al Finales
