Leon was born in Zawiercie. He worked in Katowice then moved to ul. Bracka 8, Sosnowiec. Leon was a tailor before the war. Leon's father was Michal and his mother was Maria Karamanska.(married 26th May 1896 in Baluty, Lodz. Marriage certificate #356).
Michal Kulkiewicz was born in Brzesko, Miechow county and was a bricklayer in Baluty. Michal was the son of Waclaw Kulkiewicz and Marianna (Krzyk) Kulkiewicz.
Marianna Karamanska was born in Zborow, Kalisz county in 1870, birth certificate #79.
In 1939, Leon joined the army and was captured and taken to Germay (POW number 2684) – First POW camp after being captured in September 1939 was Oflag VII-B in Eichstatt, Bavaria. On either 24.10.1939 or 24.01.1939 was transferred to Stalag VII-A, located just north of the town of Moosburgin southern Bavaria. On 08.05.1940 transferred to Oflag VII-A in Murnau, Bavaria. On 13.02.1942 transferred back to Stalag VII-A. until May 1945 when the war ended.
Leon married Natalia Raczynska after the war. Leon and Natalia came to Australia with two children, Leon jnr and Izabella in February 1950.
After living in migrant camps, they moved to Albury and then in 1963 they moved to Canberra.
Leon died suddenly of a hear attack in 1976. He left behind, his wife and three children. - Grazyna was born in Australia in 1950.
