Two officers were shot in Christiania, as well as one civilian, were shot by the gunman who then fled the scene.

The Amaq News agency, believed to be an arm of ISIS, put out a statement saying the attacker was a jihadi.

A statement said:

"The executor of the attack targeting police in Copenhagen was a soldier of the Islamic State and carried out the operation in response to calls to target coalition countries."

Local media named the man as Mesa Hodzic, but police did not confirm the identity. 

In the immediate aftermath of the shooting a police statement said:

"He apparently has ties to Millatu Ibrahim and sympathies for IS."

Officers also revealed the man was of Bosian descent and moved to the country aged four.

He has also previously been charged with attempted murder, along with his mother and father, but ended up being acquitted.

The assailant died as a result of the injuries he sustained during his arrest.
