Izcils angļu / amerikāņu komponists, džeza izpildītājs. Dzimis Kentā, Anglijā, kopš 1979.g. pamatā strādājis Ņujorkā, ASV. Viņa mūzika kinofilmām trīs reizes nominēta ASV kinoakadēmijas balvai ("Oskaram").

Beidzis Karalisko mūzikas akadēmiju Anglijā (1963-1965), papildinājies Darmštates vasaras kursos un Parīzes mūzikas kursos pie Pjēra Bulē (Pierre Boulez).

Vēlāk mācījies arī Baltimoras Mūzikas akadēmijā, ASV.
