Luigi Cavaliere Centurini (24.4.1820 - 10.11.1900) was born 200 years ago. After graduating in law, he decided to continue his studies in the field of political and administrative economics. He later became a city councillor in Genoa and was Commissioner for Public Education for many years. He was a member of numerous commissions and literary and scientific institutes. As a chess player, he was regarded as one of the most profound analysts in the field of endgames. He had already published a brochure on chess in 1853: Del Finale di Torre e Cavallo contro Torre. He wrote a study on the "Gambetto grande", which he published in 1865 with a separate supplement in Eco della Scienza. He collaborated with Italian and foreign journals of the nineteenth century; his articles appeared in La Régence of 1856 and in The Chess Monthly of 1857. He corresponded with the greatest experts of his time, in particular with Jänisch and Guretzky-Cornitz.
