Reuters reported that the 24-year-old suspect, Anis Amri, had been killed in a shootout in a suburb of the city in northern Italy, according to security sources.

Police were called to the Piazza Maggio station area at about 3am on Friday, local media reports. A man now believed to be Amri pulled a gun from his backpack and a shootout with the police followed.

One policeman was wounded in shootout, before attacker was killed.

"There is absolutely no doubt that the person who was killed is Anis Amri" - said Italy's interior minister Marco Minniti in press conference held at 23/12/2016

It was claimed that Anis Amri, the suspect in the Berlin attacks, was overheard by German intelligence offering to carry out a “suicide attack” several months ago.

But despite the alarming nature of the offer the order was not given to arrest Amri and investigators wrote him off as an “errand boy”.

“We believe that Anis Amri was steering the truck," Frauke Köhler, a spokesman for federal prosecutors, said.

“We can tell you today that there are additional indications that this suspect is with high probability the actual perpetrator,” Thomas de Maiziere, the German interior minister said.

“Fingerprints were found in the cab, and there are other, additional indications that suggest this. It is all the more important that the search is successful as soon as possible.”
