At least 5 Injured in blast at Virginia strip mall

An investigation was underway into the cause of an explosion and large fire at a shopping center in Harrisonburg, Virginia, that injured at least five people Saturday morning.

11:41 A.M. UPDATE on the incident and subsequent fire that took place this morning off-campus at the Miller Circle area of S. Main Street:

A total of three people were transported to the hospital. Two are known not to be JMU students, one is known to be a JMU student. The JMU student transported to the hospital has minor injuries and is expected to be released soon. Two other students were involved, treated on-scene and released. All three injured students were participating in a community event hosted off-campus, and JMU Student Affairs staff has been in contact and offered support to students involved.

The university is thankful to all first responders actively working on scene. The City of Harrisonburg’s investigation remains ongoing.
