Willem Johannes Witteveen (5 May 1952 – 17 July 2014) was a Dutch legal scholar and politician. He was a Member of the Senate for the Labour Party. He was one of the passengers of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 that was shot down on 17 July 2014 over Ukraine.
Early life and education
Willem Johannes Witteveen was born on 5 May 1952 in Rotterdam in the Netherlands. He is the son of liberal politicianJohan Witteveen and great-grandson of social-democratic politican Floor Wibaut.
He went to primary school in Rotterdam and to secondary school (1964–1970) in Wassenaar. He studied law at Leiden University (1970–1978).
Career
From 1979 to 1989, he worked as a scientist at the Leiden University. In 1988, he received his PhD cum laude. From 1990 to his death, he was a professor of law at Tilburg University.
Witteveen was a member of the Labour Party since 1994. He was a member of the Senate from 1999 to 2007. In the2007 and 2011 Senate elections, he was at an unelectable position on the candidate list.
From 2007 to his death, he was also dean of the Bachelor of Liberal Arts at Tilburg University. From 2013 to his death, he was again a senator.
Death
Witteveen died on 17 July 2014 at the age of 62 along with his wife Lidwien Heerkens and their daughter Marit Witteveen when they were passengers on Malaysia Airlines Flight 17, which was shot down near Hrabove, Ukraine.
Personal life
Witteveen was a sufist. In 1978, he married Lidwien Heerkens. They had a daughter and a son.

According to Doneck terrorist leader Girkin (Strelkov) tweets, plane was hit down by his men. As it was announced before on 29/6/2014 terrorists occupied Ukrainian air defence unit near Ukraine border and have anti-air systems, including BUK (SA-11 Gadfly). Rocket was launched from cossacks' ataman Kozytsin positions. According to some experts, Russian aircraft with Russian tourists was expected to be shot down, to back further wide-scale Russian invasion in Ukraine after Crimea and East Ukraine
