NEW YORK, June 15 (UPI) -- Shipping industry leader Paul Soros died at his New York home Saturday, his son Peter said. He was 87.
The New York Times reported Soros, an engineer who was born in Hungary, built Soros Associates into the dominating port-building company in the industry
He was the older brother of George Soros, who founded Soros Fund Management and is one of the world's richest men.
Soros had Parkinson's disease, cancer, diabetes and renal failure. The Times said he survived losing a kidney as a young man and lost an eye in a golfing accident.
A member of a prosperous Jewish family, he also survived the Nazi invasion of Hungary during World War II and escaped Russian troops who suspected he was a Nazi officer trying to escape.
"My story is riches to rags to riches again," the Times reported Soros once said. "I was lucky to survive. The rest was relatively easy."
