In November 1908 (the month following Samuel Cody's first flight in Britain) the firm of Short Brothers was registered at Battersea, each brother subscribing £200 towards its accumulated capital of just £600. The younger brothers had already built a glider for Moore-Brabazon, but although he installed an engine it failed to leave the ground. Horace's positive contributions soon became evident when the three produced the glider on which Charles Rolls learned to fly. In the process they proved themselves fast and accurate workers for, after ordering it in May 1909, Rolls was using it from July of the same year.

Short Type 184, piloted by Flight Commander Charles Edmonds, was the first aircraft in the world to attack an enemy ship with an air-launched torpedo. However, the ship had already been crippled by a torpedo fired by the British submarine E14.
