Nasim Najafi Aghdam, 39, American animal rights activist, suspect in the YouTube headquarters shooting, suicide by gunshot.

YouTube shooter's videos reveal anger at company

On April 3, 2018, just before 1:00 p.m. PDT, a shooting occurred at YouTube headquarters in San Bruno, California, United States. The suspect, Nasim Najafi Aghdam, armed with a handgun, approached an outdoor patio and opened fire. Three people sustained gunshot wounds (including one who sustained critical injuries); an additional person was injured while fleeing the building. Police reported that the shooter, a woman, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The San Mateo County Sheriff and local San Bruno Police responded to the scene and advised the public to stay out of the area. Multiple YouTube employees posted on Twitter and Snapchat to share live ongoing updates from the campus.

San Bruno police said in a release, "the investigation is now looking into a website that appears to show the same woman complaining about YouTube stifling traffic and suppressing videos."

A female suspect, Nasim Najafi Aghdam, was identified. She was 39 years old and died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Authorities initially thought she was motivated by a domestic dispute.

Aghdam also maintained a YouTube channel. She complained about YouTube on her website, saying that "[YouTube] filtered [her] channels to keep them from getting views!”, as well as demonetizing most of her videos. She previously protested against certain U.S. Marines training procedures.

The shooting was a rare example of an active shooter incident committed solely by a woman; a 2014 FBI study reported that women perpetrated just six out of 160 active shooter incidents in the United States between 2000 and 2013.

Victims

San Francisco General Hospital and Stanford University Medical Center treated patients from the incident. Three injuries were reported following the incident. The identified victims are a 36-year-old man in critical condition, a 32-year-old woman in fair condition and a 27-year-old woman in stable condition.

Reactions

President Donald Trump was briefed on the shooting and tweeted "thoughts and prayers" to those affected.
