A brief history
In the year 1874 the foundation stone was laid for the new Congregational Church building in Fenstanton, (prior to that date the Congregationalists and the Baptists had shared a building), and it was officially opened in 1875. It's life as a Congregational Church continued until 1972 when, with other Congregational Churches in England and Wales, it joined the Presbyterian Church of England to form the United Reformed Church. In 1983 the Church started a new chapter in its life when it joined with the Free Church in St. Ives and the then Houghton Chapel Retreat to form the St. Ives Group of Churches. In 1998 it was discovered that the Church floor, and in particular the joists under the floor, had wet rot.
The cost of repairing and maintaining both the Church building and the former manse, next door, was now beyond our means. This was a devastating blow.
In the weeks and months that followed much time was spent in thinking, discussion and prayer as we tried to discover what our vision for the Church was and how God was leading us. Throughout this time we held onto our convictions that we would deal with the problems and continue our witness in the village.
The sale of the former manse helped towards the cost of an exciting redevelopment project which has resulted in a welcoming and versatile building, which is not only used for Christian worship, but also provides space and facilities for various community groups.
