Outrage in Scandinavia after a Swedish man was beaten to death by a gang of Africans while at a fan zone watching Norway vs Côte d'Ivoire
He was an off-duty policeman and leaves behind a wife & two daughters.
His life mattered.
A Swedish police officer who was off-duty has died after being seriously assaulted during a FIFA World Cup fan event in Copenhagen, prompting renewed concerns over security at public football screenings in the Danish capital.
The victim has been identified as Christian Zedig, 32, an officer with the Swedish Police Authority. He was attacked on 30 June at the FIFA World Cup fan zone in Copenhagen's Islands Brygge district, where supporters had gathered to watch the Round of 32 match between Norway and Côte d'Ivoire on a giant screen. Sweden's World Cup match against France was scheduled to be shown later that evening.
According to Danish prosecutors, an altercation broke out during a goal celebration, during which Zedig was allegedly punched, causing severe injuries. He later died from those injuries.
A suspect, also in his 30s, surrendered to Danish police on July 3 after authorities released his photograph in an appeal to the public. He has been remanded in custody for 26 days while the investigation continues and denies any wrongdoing.
The death has sent shockwaves through Sweden's police community.
"It is with great sadness that I receive the news that a colleague has passed away after being seriously assaulted during leave in Copenhagen. My warmest thoughts go to his family, friends and colleagues," said Katharina von Sydow, president of the Swedish Police Association.
Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson also expressed his condolences. "Many of us have been touched by the terrible news that a Swedish police officer on vacation in Denmark has died in Copenhagen. My thoughts are with the family and all the loved ones who have lost someone dear," he said in a written statement.
The officer's local police chief confirmed his death, and a memorial ceremony was held at his police station in Sweden. Åsa Bergman, chairwoman of the Eastern Police Association, said colleagues had gathered to support one another. "We are there to support the man's colleagues. It is, of course, very sad," she said.
According to Swedish media, Zedig is survived by his wife and two young daughters. In a tribute shared on social media, his sister described the family's grief as "never-ending."
The fatal assault has also reignited debate over security arrangements at Copenhagen's FIFA World Cup fan zone.
Jakob Næsager, Copenhagen's Mayor for Children and Youth, has called for public screenings at Islands Brygge to be suspended after two violent incidents were reported at the venue within a week.
"When a public celebration turns into brutal violence and a Swedish guest in a football shirt is left in a serious condition, we need to draw a line in the sand," Næsager said, arguing that the event should not continue in its current form.
However, Copenhagen's Mayor for Culture, Christopher Rohl, opposed shutting down the fan zone, saying the violence was the responsibility of those involved rather than the event itself.
"The event isn't the issue, rather the thugs are," Rohl said, adding that it would be unfortunate to end the World Cup celebrations because of isolated incidents.
Organisers of the fan zone, Fodboldsfesten, said they would strengthen security measures by deploying additional staff equipped with body cameras, introducing entrance screening and increasing surveillance around the venue.
Danish police have not called for the fan zone to be closed, and public screenings are expected to continue under heightened security while the investigation into the fatal assault remains ongoing.
